Still alive and kicking!

So I've moved to southampton to study a BA in Graphic design. and so i am enjoying it. We went on a trip to amsterdam and were told we have to create 2 double page spreads on the given locations (mine was the tuschinski cinema) but we were allowed to stray off topic if we felt it was necessary. So i brought a 35mm slr camera with me to get all my photos. mostly down to the fact i don't have any other camera. But because i took so many photos with this method i unfortunately lost many many potentially awesome photos which broke my heart.

As i spent alot of the trip taking photos i felt that i should use one of the black and white ones that i shot on ilford xp5. as for the layout i wanted to keep it simple with the typography on the left while still giving room for the body copy

this is my more simple modern layout. i like this style and i think it compliments how amsterdam is. As it comes across clean and thought out which is sort of like the city.

just getting some ideas down here as potential titles playing about with different fonts seeing how they work together.

Escapizm

For my most recent project i decided to create a website which you could type in your postcode and search for walks in the local area. This website is based around the idea of needing to escape and relax.
Here is the homepage you would be greeted by when you visit escapizm.com

C~ Music

A friend of mine has recently started his journey into electronic music production. And to support him i created a simple logo so to give him more definition and symbolism. Although its early days for C~ (pronounced C squiggly) i have alot of faith in his talent to progress over the next few years. Check out his progress now at https://soundcloud.com/calvin-seymour/ And while your at it check out https://soundcloud.com/the-dr-is-in

Everybody loves rap music.

So why not create a few minimalism posters based around rap artists? These designs were all created this morning while waiting for lesson to start. It was more a brief task to keep me entertained and occupied while time was going by. Also while listening to hip hop.

Bellow the artists i've posted some videos so you can check them out for your selfs.

Life of Pi Minimal Book Cover

Created using Illustrator. Here i was set the task of creating a movie poster in a minimal style. I decided on using Yann Martels life of pi because from watching the film recently i understand what needs to be summarised to portray the story the way it is. In the film there where many scenes where everything was very minimal anyway and this makes for good inspiration when designing a relevant minimalist poster.
After creating the poster i cam to the conclusion it would look much better as a book cover, so i decided to add a few extra things so it could also serve that purpose. This gives the design more flexibility in its use. Also created on Illustrator Full book cover for Life of Pi Using Minimalism to summarise the main visual aspects of the film. I used things that would be recognisable to make a link to the story as this would portray the story exactly how it is.

Also a desktop wallpaper version incase you are interested.

Phileas Fogg Non Potato Crisps

This is a poster i created for an advertising project. The brief stated that it must be for a non potato crisp. I chose the brand Phileas Fogg because i love their house style and wanted to work with it.

Too ill to get out of bed? I'll make posters.

After deciding i don't want to leave my bed today i then realised i can't sit here in silence for the next 12 hours doing nothing. So i decided it make some minimalist posters for a few of my favourite electronic artists.

I Started with The Orb. for the background i used a photo of the sky which i then created a bitmap layer which i multiplied on top if it.This is what inspired the font choice of "CHEESE PIZZA" I also chose circles for the obvious reason that its a poster for "The Orb".

Once again following the same style here but instead using yellow triangles. I thought these would relate well to flying lotus and they have a very mystic sound to them which i feel could be related to pyramids and ancient civilisation.

As a big fan of Boards of Canada i am aware they have a song called turquoise hexagon sun. So i instantly thought of this when i was trying to think of a shape to represent them.

The adventures of a sleepy orange

Heres a comic i made yesterday about an orange is space. The idea came from when i was eating the largest orange i've ever come across. Jokes were thrown around about it having its own centre of gravity and the thought of it in space stuck in my mind, So i just had to get it visualised. I enjoyed trying this Benday dot style and i think ill use it again. In my eyes this was a success!

Some illustrations from over time

This illustration was produced one rainy day when i woke up and decided id create a a3 digital illustration. Although i started out with a a3 pencil drawing that i then scanned in. I don't know what it was that made me want to create a pyramid headed creature, but i felt it was a stepping stone to learning how to combine photoshop and illustrator in an illustration.

I made this piece in a college photoshop tutorial lesson on how to use layer effects to make illustrations look like they are inked onto a paint splattered background. i luckily had this paint splatter scanned in already for a previous project so i didn't have to mess around with photoshop brushes as i find they never quite create the same effect.

I decided id create an illustration purely in illustrator and after listening to a lot of tame impala i thought i would reflect the mood of the music. It has a dreamy vibe and expresses the idea of a wondering mind. And the idea of the floating dreamy head is shown through the character being a balloon.

I was set a group project at college to design a zine. After a short debate we all agreed a animal themed illustration zine was a good idea. i was given the job of the front, back and center two pages. I drew this giraffe to be in the double page and i even wrote a story for it. I gave him a neck that is split into multiple sections because i did't want this to be any old giraffe.

This was the cover for our zine. I had to use this as the cover because it was the illustration most appreciated by my peers out of the other ones. I used illustrator to vector trace a scanned pencil illustration.

This is my most recent illustration for a narrative images brief in which we had to create an illustration for a story . But i wanted to carry on the piece even when i finished. i decided i wanted to put the story inside the illustration to give the whole thing a lot more information.

Anti Drugs campaign

Here is where i started when coming up with ideas for my final magazine advert. Including slogans and basic layout templates.

After considering possible layouts i took photos in a series of different locations, but i found this one to be the best for the lighting.

I created a folder to store many experiments with type and picture editing. where i experimented with different images and different fonts using photoshop effects to see what i could do with the lighting.

My final advert. Although the contrast and brightens have changed, above this image you can get an idea of the softer vibe that is shown through the ability to see more of the surrounding area.

A Short Design Project

We were set a project to redesign the banners which direct you to the different sections of the natural history museum. To start my research me and a few friends went to visit the natural history museum. I took some pictures and from what i gathered the building was so intricate that an over complicated banner design would contrast too strongly against the structures detail.

Then after returning home i decided it was time to get some ideas down, these were my favourites as they all followed this simple style i had visualised. I considered many things but i came to decide that the simple circles would do the job. I like how it could be related to the alignment of planets and the relevance that has within the museum.

Photoshop collages

This college started by me just simply experimenting with shapes, then reflecting them and changing opacity. Im pleased with the outcome, i love the contrast between the foregrounds colourful geometric angles to the backgrounds natural greyscale shapes. I enjoyed putting this one together and i found i had a space in the middle to put a word. I decided on zen because of the nature of how you feel when you are stood on a huge hill looking as far as the eye can see.
Here i got a bit more experimental, there are so many layers to this image and even in the background you have 4 different landscapes. but i feel it lost its effect allot with too many layers. It still came out very nicely and i am pretty proud of the twisted scientific nature of this piece. You may wonder the significance of the character in the middle. Hes a swiss scientist and i thought that would be relivant for all the circles and lines in their molicule-esqe format.
